Spring Boat Maintenance Checklist: Get Your Vessel Ready for the Water

As the weather warms up and boating season kicks off, now’s the time to make sure your boat is in top shape. A little maintenance now can prevent major headaches (and costs) later. Here’s a quick checklist from your trusted mobile marine mechanic to get you ready for the season:

1. Inspect the Hull and Propeller

  • Check for cracks, blisters, or damage.

  • Clean and inspect the prop for dings or bent blades—small issues can reduce performance and fuel efficiency.

2. Change Engine Oil and Filters

  • Old oil can break down over time, even if your boat’s been sitting.

  • Change both the oil and the oil filter for a fresh start.

3. Test the Battery

  • Make sure it's fully charged and holding a charge.

  • Clean terminals and check connections for corrosion.

4. Fuel System Check

  • Look for any leaks, cracked fuel lines, or corrosion around fittings.

  • Replace old fuel filters and make sure you’re using fuel stabilizer if the boat sat during winter.

5. Safety Gear Inventory

  • Check fire extinguishers, life jackets, flares, and first aid kits.

  • Replace anything expired or damaged.

6. Water System and Bilge Pump

  • Test your bilge pump to ensure it’s working automatically and manually.

  • Check hoses and clamps for wear or leaks.
